Sport at Guildford Grammar School: A Commitment to Excellence

At Guildford Grammar School, sport is part of who we are and central to each student’s growth. With a strong tradition of excellence and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity, every student engages in our sport program. This ensures that all students, whatever their experience or ambition, gain the physical, social and emotional benefits that come with regular participation.

Sport is compulsory for every student from Years 4 to 12, nurturing active involvement, teamwork and resilience. This consistent expectation strengthens routines, builds confidence and supports the development of essential life skills.

Preparatory School Sport

In the Preparatory School, students take part in a wide selection of sports including AFL, basketball, cricket, hockey, equestrian, netball, soccer, tennis, volleyball and water polo. They also compete in JPSSA and IPSHA interschool events, alongside School swimming and athletics carnivals for all ages. These opportunities help students develop coordination, encourage participation and build the foundations for future success.

Senior School Sport

As students enter the Senior School, this foundation continues through a structured and compulsory sport program. Every student participates in both a summer and winter sport each year. Training follows a consistent pattern of two sessions per week with one weekly fixture.

Boys compete within the PSA competition framework, and girls take part in community-based competitions that vary by sport and year group. While the schedules differ to reflect these pathways, all students train regularly and represent the School through weekly fixtures as an essential part of their co-curricular commitment.

This whole-school approach reinforces effort, connection and pride in contributing to something larger than oneself, supporting students as they grow in skill and character throughout their Guildford Grammar journey.

Sport is an integral part of the Guildford Grammar experience. By making sport compulsory for every Year 4 to Year 12 student, we nurture a culture of active participation, teamwork and resilience. This commitment helps students develop essential life skills, forge lasting friendships and embrace the values of effort, integrity and perseverance.

Coaching for Growth and Performance

Guildford Grammar’s coaching program has been reshaped to lift the standard of sport across the School. Under the leadership of our Director of Sport, Mr David Guest, and our Heads of Sport, each sporting code now benefits from specialist expertise, consistent systems and clear expectations.

Our Head Coaches bring experience from high-performance and elite environments. They design structured training sessions, teach the Guildford Grammar style of play and use video review and performance data to guide improvement. Students receive focused instruction, regular feedback and strong support, helping them develop skill, confidence and good decision-making.

Partnerships with professional sporting organisations, including Swan Districts Football Club, add further depth to the program through mentoring, pathways and access to specialist resources.
