House System
Tradition and Belonging
Guildford Grammar’s House System is a cherished part of our heritage, creating a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie among students.
For over a century, the House System has been a cornerstone of the Guildford Grammar experience, instilling pride, loyalty and a deep sense of community that students carry with them long after they leave the school.
The House system encourages friendly competition, teamwork and school spirit through House events, sports, academic pursuits and cultural activities.

SCHOOL HOUSE
Established in 1922.
House colour was originally chocolate, changed to blue in the 1930s.
First House Master: Hugh Alexander Brown.
First House Captain: Jack Paterson Fernandez.

ST GEORGE’S HOUSE
Established in 1922.
Originally called ‘New House’ until ‘St George’s’ was adopted later in the year.
First House Master: A.B.D Esson.
First House Captain: Ernest William Jones.

STIRLING HOUSE
Established in 1922.
Originally called Day Boy House, the ‘Stirling’ name was adopted in 1923 after Captain James Stirling. The land of Woodbridge House, (where the School first began) was once part of Captain James Stirling’s estate.
First House Master: John Cowley.
First House Captain: Philip Bessel-Brown.

HENN’S HOUSE
Established in 1927.
School House was divided into two with half going to Henn’s House.
Henn’s House is named after headmaster (1909-1924) Canon Percy Umfreville Henn.
The House colour was decided on by vote.
First House Master: Norman Hollingdale Roff.
First House Captain: Eric Merryweather.

HARPER HOUSE
Established in 1958.
In 1957, Preparatory boarders moved into the old Headmaster’s House.
Harper House is named after Charles Harper, the founder of Guildford Grammar School, who founded the School in the billiards room of his Woodbridge home.
First House Master: Douglas McIntyre.
First House captain: Murray Taylor.

WOODBRIDGE HOUSE
Established in 1962.
Stirling House was the only Day Boy house since 1922. At the beginning of 1961, it had grown too much and was split into two, while remaining one House name until 1962 when Woodbridge House was formed.
The House was named Woodbridge after the home of Charles Harper (founder of the School), Woodbridge House, which still stands proudly today.
First House Master: Ted Barber.
First House Captain: Barry Carson.
Woodbridge House was given the colours maroon and gold after the favourite Football team of the first House Captain Barry Carson- Subiaco FC.

FREETH HOUSE
Established 1965.
The name of the House was chosen to acknowledge the contributions of Bishop Freeth, the longest serving headmaster from 1928 to 1949.
First House Master: Dixie Scott.
First House Captain: Brendon Edward Kay (1967).
Dixie Scott, first House Master, was a South Fremantle footy supporter, therefore the colours of red and white were adopted for the house

BENNETT HOUSE
Established in 1980.
The headmaster, John Moody, wanted to increase enrolments in 1979 and so needed another Day Boy House.
Bennett House was named after the first headmaster of the School, Frank Bennett.
First House Master: Robert ‘Rube’ Edmonds.
First House Captain: Darrell Stops.
