Kelsi Brennan: Old Guildfordian (2024), Scholarship Recipient
When Kelsi sat down with Mr Hurley and Mr Webber, the conversation flowed. They asked about her goals, values and passions. At the end, they told her she’d received the Open Music Scholarship.
“I thought I’d be waiting weeks,” she says. “It didn’t feel real in the moment.”
Already a student at Guildford Grammar School, the scholarship meant she could complete her schooling in a place she knew well.
“Being able to continue my journey at Guildford was significant. I’d already spent years there and felt part of the community. Music was something I really enjoyed and to be recognised for that was rewarding.”
Twelve years at the School, from Preparatory to Year 12, gave her time to explore a broad mix of opportunities. She credits Guildford Grammar with developing both her academic and personal strengths.
“I’d like to think I finished school stronger than I started, more resilient, more confident in my values, and more open to challenge. Guildford was a place where I could be competitive and driven, but also learn the value of humility.”
Shaped by Sport and Music
Rowing became a defining part of her Senior School experience. From Year 9 crews to state and national competition, it demanded discipline and shaped her mindset.
“Rowing taught me to push past discomfort. That ability to keep going has transferred into everything else I do, including long-distance running and training for a half ironman.”
The Music Department remained an important space throughout her schooling. She notes that it offered both creative outlets and somewhere to think.
“There was always a spare piano or drum kit if you needed it. It reminded me that you don’t have to step away from the things you enjoy just because they’re not part of the crowd.”
Support That Endures
She also points to individual teachers across different subjects who encouraged curiosity and built confidence. “Teachers like Mr Wildman, Mr Wilson, Mr Prosser and Ms Jin made us feel capable. Whether we were acting out historical battles or using our language skills in real scenarios, they reinforced that we could study anything we set our minds to.”
Now studying a double degree in Biomedicine and Law, she sees a direct link between her school experience and her post-school path. The scholarship, she says, played a key role in keeping those opportunities open.
“It allowed me to engage fully with school life, not just in the classroom, but in music, sport and leadership. It gave me access to a network of mentors, and eventually the chance to return as a coach. That continuity has been important.”
Why Scholarships Matter
When asked how her life might have looked without the scholarship, she says “It’s hard to say. I can’t really picture my school experience any other way. Guildford was where I grew up.”
She believes scholarships at Guildford Grammar School offer more than financial assistance.
“Scholarships give students the chance to be part of something that pushes them and supports them. It’s about access, to experiences, to people, to challenges that shape who you become.”
For Kelsi, the scholarship ensured she could take part in the full breadth of school life and stay connected to it well beyond graduation.
