Igniting Curiosity

Science Week celebrates the way our students think, build and explore every day. In our Preparatory School, STEAM learning is purposeful and hands-on. It’s where students combine creative thinking with real-world application and begin to see themselves as innovators, engineers and problem-solvers.

In a recent STEAM session Year 4, students applied their understanding of energy transfer through the design and construction of Rube Goldberg-style machines. They began with sketched concepts and moved into our Maker Spaces, using saws, clamps and safety gear to build wooden components. These creations demonstrate potential and kinetic energy in action and highlight the growing confidence of our young engineers.

In Year 5, students explored the science of light and optics by creating pinhole camera telescopes. Inspired by the discoveries of the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, students used everyday materials to investigate how light travels and how images are formed. The discovery that their telescopes projected an upside-down image prompted deeper questions about the human eye, optical science and space technology.

Bringing Science to Life

Throughout Science Week, students will continue exploring through space-themed experiences in our STEAM Maker Spaces. Each lunchtime, students are invited to:

  • Drive space rover robots and navigate simulated missions
  • Build and launch Lego cars across the surface of the moon
  • Join virtual sessions with scientists working in space exploration

These activities are designed to build on classroom learning while encouraging students to explore new ideas, test their theories and work with others in a collaborative environment.

STEAM Learning with Purpose 

STEAM is an integrated part of our curriculum from Years 1 to 6. In every session, students are asked to think critically, use their hands creatively and apply what they’ve learned in new ways. Whether coding, constructing or solving complex problems, they are building the skills needed for a rapidly changing world. 

By blending Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics, our approach equips students to ask questions, seek solutions and express their thinking in a range of ways. It helps them connect with the world around them and understand how innovation begins – with curiosity and dedication. 

Science Week brings these stories to the surface. It gives our students space to experiment, discover and imagine what’s possible when they take the lead in their own learning.
