On Boarding with Oliver
For School Captain Oliver, boarding at Guildford grammar has been more than a place to stay. It’s where he’s grown, taken on challenges and found a strong sense of belonging.
Originally from Beverley, Oliver says he misses “the sunsets and the sights, being within nature.” While it’s not the same as home, life at Guildford Grammar keeps him close to the outdoors, with bushland, open space and the Swan River right on his doorstep.
“You’re always on the move, always doing something,” he says. “It’s busy, but you always have people there to make your life better… that’s what makes it as special as it is. It’s your friends and the community.”
From the early emotions of leaving home to now leading the student body, Oliver’s experience reflects the confidence that can grow in a well supported environment.
Trying Something New
Oliver didn’t just settle into boarding. He leaned into it. He took up two sports he’d never tried before: rugby and rowing.
“I chose them both because they were new to me,” he explains. “My dad did both at Guildford, so I thought I’d give them a go. I’ve enjoyed them because they really challenge me… you sacrifice for your teammates and that makes you feel valued.”
And sport isn’t the only thing Oliver has tried. He’s performed as the lead in school musicals, plays guitar in the rock band, picked up other instruments, joined other sports and contributes to student life through leadership.
Life in Boarding
At Guildford Grammar, boarding life is grounded in care. Each year group is supported by a dedicated coordinator who lives on campus and knows the students well. A strong pastoral team wraps around the boarding community, helping students grow academically, socially and emotionally.
“It’s about pacing yourself, getting along with everyone and finding comfort in the small things… just hanging out in each other’s rooms, playing table tennis or sitting down to dinner together.”
Our youngest boarders are also supported through Guildford Ascent, a nine-month onboarding program designed to ease the transition into boarding. Through personal visits, shared experiences and early access to resources, students build friendships, develop routines and feel prepared before they even move in.
Advice for Younger Boarders
“Just because you’re from the country or a regional area doesn’t mean you should be any less involved,” Oliver says. “Put yourself out there and really get involved in the school community, just like you would at home.”
Staying Connected to Home
Oliver understands what his journey means to others back home.
“People are proud to have someone from their hometown that is School Captain of a school as good as Guildford Grammar.”
Boarding doesn’t just change a student’s future. It can open doors for others to follow. Leadership here is grounded in action and students take those lessons with them.
“I feel comfortable here now… it’s changed from a place where I just go to stay, to where I can really be part of something.”
And that something is full of possibility.
