Behind the Scenes of Boarding

Behind the scenes of our vibrant Boarding community are the dedicated Year Coordinators who live onsite and walk alongside our students every day. More than just staff members, they are mentors  and consistent adult figures who bring warmth and guidance to Boarding life at Guildford Grammar School.

A Family Within the School

Gemma Haddleton, Year 7 Coordinator, has experienced Boarding from both a professional and personal perspective. “The Boarding community at Guildford Grammar is incredibly special. My children have grown up surrounded by Boarders — they’re part of our extended family,” she shares. From walking students to class to reading bedtime stories, Gemma’s gentle routines help new Boarders find their feet and flourish in their first year away from home.

Consistency and Connection

Craig Williamson, who supports the Year 9 cohort, highlights the power of connection. “We carry each other through the highs and lows. That shared journey makes the culture of ‘family’ a special thing to be part of.” Whether through casual chats or deeper conversations in moments of need, consistency and availability are Craig’s hallmarks of care.

For James Claxon, it’s the everyday moments that build trust. “Small conversations, often. That’s where trust is built. Guildford Grit means showing up, even after a tough day, and still giving your best at sport, co-curriculars or prep.” The strength of the boarding community, he says, comes from recognising and supporting each other through both triumphs and challenges.

Support That Evolves With Each Student

Ashleigh Resuggan, who works with Year 10 students, reflects on the unique setting of Guildford Grammar School. “Boarding at Guildford Grammar School is open and vast, yet surrounded by a close-knit, supportive community. It’s about being the bridge between home and school, creating a safe environment where each student can grow.” Her role includes creating that bridge by staying connected with families and helping students navigate the demands of academic and social life.

Moments That Matter

Cam Knapton, Year 8 Coordinator, points to the bonds that form through shared experiences. “It’s like a large extended family. Guildford Grit means managing life away from home and building your own support network.” He champions Thursday night unplugged, a chance for students to connect and be active, as a standout tradition in the week.

For Chris Winters, who supports our senior students, it’s about preparing them for life beyond school. “I’ve never been to a school that offers such a broad range of opportunities. Saying yes more than no. That’s grit. Our boarders are learning life skills that many only gain much later.” He draws on wisdom and lived experience to help students find perspective, celebrate their progress and push through setbacks.

A Home Built on Care

Together, our Year Coordinators help shape a boarding culture built on trust, consistency and care. Their presence on campus, as neighbours, mentors and caregivers, brings a genuine sense of home to Guildford Grammar’s boarding community.
