Prep School Brings Matilda to Life
Our Preparatory School students filled the DLD with energy, colour and joy on 4–5 September as they brought Matilda Jr. The Musical to the stage. Three performances, a matinee for their peers and two evening shows for packed audiences, showcased the creativity, talent and confidence of our Years 4–6 cast after months of preparation.
Adapted with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, Matilda the Musical Jr. tells the tale of a brilliant young girl who, despite neglectful parents and a tyrannical headmistress, discovers the power of kindness, intelligence and courage. Reviewer Richard Hyde described the show as “a great musical with wit, heart and memorable songs,” a description that matched the lively, high-energy performances our community experienced in the DLD.
Several student performances stood out, including Grace as an empathetic and intelligent Matilda, Isobel as a gentle and kind Miss Honey and Nava with a commanding stage presence as Miss Trunchbull. The Wormwood family brought plenty of humour, August’s flamboyant Rudolpho added flair, Jovie and Kaylie-Ann made an impression as the Escapologist and Acrobat, and Hamish’s memorable turn as Bruce in the famous chocolate cake scene delighted audiences. Director Caroline Edwards guided the large ensemble with care, ensuring every student had a role to play in the big set-piece numbers that filled the theatre with energy and movement.
Applause from the Community
Behind the scenes, detailed sets, clever lighting, creative costumes and the infamous chocolate cake helped transform the stage into Crunchem Hall. These elements, combined with the energy of the students, made for a production that was both dramatic and fun.
The response from families captured the pride in the room. “The musical was so delightful,” wrote one grandparent. “We were awe struck by the energy… So much work went into the preparation that we congratulate all involved.” Another parent shared, “I was blown away by how professional and thoroughly entertaining it was. An amazing feat to coordinate and direct so many Prep School kids on one stage.”
Our Principal Peter Allen reflected on the achievement saying:
“Matilda Jr. The performance was outstanding along with the joy on the faces of those on stage! Thank you so much to all the staff who helped make this moment happen.”
There were loud dramatic numbers and softer moments of courage and care. Overall, Matilda the Musical Jr. was creative, energetic and full of joy. A Celebration of learning, talent and simple happiness of telling a good story together.
