FAQ's

Children must turn three by 30 June in the year they enter Little Explorers and can only commence in the program when they have had their third birthday.

We value the importance of a supportive and positive transition to school for each child and their family. In the year prior to your child starting in Little Explorers, a Play Date will be held for all students and families to meet with the educators, explore the indoor and outdoor learning environments and connect with other members of the Guildford Grammar School community.

A Transition Week is scheduled in the first week of school, with children who have turned three attending on allocated days from 9.00am to 12.30pm in small groups. Finalised details will be communicated by the school closer to the commencement of Transition Week.

If your child turns three after the school year has commenced, the Deputy Head of Preparatory – Little Explorers to Year 2, will be in contact closer to the official commencement date to discuss transition.

The Little Explorers Program is play-based with purposeful learning areas for the children to explore at a developmentally appropriate level. With indoor and outdoor play, music and movement, the children are encouraged to be curious about their world.

The children will need to bring morning tea and lunch each day. You know what your child likes best; we simply ask that lunch boxes predominantly contain healthy food items and minimal treat foods.

You will be able to provide those details as you progress through the enrolment process. We ask you to also discuss these requirements with the Little Explorers teacher at the beginning of the year or as applicable.

Please provide a current, colour copy of your Anaphylaxis Action Plan and Asthma Plan to the Admissions team if you haven’t highlighted this with them already. It must also contain a recent photo of your child.

Please ensure you have provided all items on the Equipment List. Provision of a spare set of GGS uniform, which is clearly labelled, is to be provided in your child’s school bag in case of emergencies.

We also require one small pillow and a small towel/rug, both clearly labelled, to be used during rest/quiet time. These items will stay at school.

The school is committed to open communication with families. The Guildford Grammar School App is an essential tool for communication and contains a link to the Parent Hub, which provides comprehensive information, such as details on uniform requirements, terms dates and maps. You will also receive regular notifications on key requirements specific to Little Explorers.

A digital portfolio of learning detailing your child’s growth and progress is available via the SeeSaw app, in addition to formal and informal opportunities to meet with the Little Explorers teacher.

If your child is sick, please use the ‘Absentees’ tab on the Guildford Grammar School app.

The Little Explorers staff or school nurse will call you, requesting you come to collect your child as soon as you are able to. If they cannot reach you, the staff will contact the emergency contacts that you have listed on your enrolment.

If you have a concern about the program, you are welcome to discuss this with the class teacher in the first instance. If the concern remains unresolved, then please contact the Deputy Head of Preparatory – Little Explorers – Year 2.

Your child should ideally toilet independently and be comfortable using a different toilet from home. We acknowledge that for various reasons, a child may have not yet mastered toilet training and if this is the case, please discuss this with the Little Explorers teacher.

Provision will be made in the Little Explorers timetable for children to have a short rest period to listen to music, read a book and relax and recharge. Ample opportunities are afforded for children to rest as required; however, extended naps or day sleeps are best supported following the conclusion of the school day.

As always, good communication can help everyone to be very sure of what your arrangements are. When children are late, it can be difficult for them to settle in, so advance notice is appreciated so that we can take this into account. Late pick-ups are not possible; however Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) is available until 6.00pm. Bookings can be made via Xplor for families already enrolled in OSHC. For new enrolments in the service, please contact OutofSchoolHoursCare@ggs.wa.edu.au
