Real World Learning

Year 12 Agribusiness students recently travelled beyond the classroom to experience the inner workings of Western Australia’s food supply chain. From livestock logistics to leafy greens and local retail, the full-day tour brought the State’s thriving agricultural sector to life through hands-on learning and direct industry engagement.

From Paddock to Plate

The group visited four key enterprises across the Bindoon and Gingin regions: Muchea Livestock Centre, Loose Leaf Lettuce Company, Northern Valleys Locavore Store and Northern Valley Packers. Each stop offered a unique window into how food travels from farm gate to consumer, and the career opportunities that support every stage of the journey.

At Muchea Livestock Centre, students observed large-scale livestock trading and the logistics behind animal handling and market operations. At Loose Leaf Lettuce Company, they explored sustainable farming practices and technologies used in fresh produce production. At Northern Valleys Locavore Store, students connected with the people driving local food systems, before finishing at Northern Valley Packers to see produce grading, packing and retail preparation in action.

Bridging Education and Industry

The tour was coordinated and accompanied by Alysia Kepert from the University of Western Australia, who is promoting the uptake of the new ATAR Agriculture courses, Agribusiness and Agricultural Science and Technology.

“We commend Guildford Grammar School for implementing the new Agribusiness course at the earliest opportunity and connecting students to real-life learning and career possibilities,” Ms Kepert said.

“The Agribusiness tour provided students with a ‘behind the scenes’ experience of several businesses in the Bindoon-Gingin area, linking them directly with industry, who have been really supportive of this initiative.”

“We know the direct support for teachers and their students is critical to building a strong secondary-tertiary pathway into agricultural careers.”

A Strong Foundation for the Future

Charles Fedor, Teacher of Humanities and Social Sciences said it was an “incredible day” for the students, offering a “unique look at the agricultural supply chain.”

“Students explored how products move from paddock to plate and discovered the wide variety of careers available in business, technology and economics,” he said.

The tour reflects Guildford Grammar’s commitment to early adoption of future-focused curriculum and its ongoing support for students exploring careers in key industries.

Leading with Purpose

Leah Truscott, Head of Learning – Humanities and Social Sciences said the tour highlighted the importance of connecting students with real-world learning and careers that matter.

“This experience reflects the School’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and developing the next generation of leaders for regional and national industries.”

Guildford Grammar is proud to be at the forefront of this initiative, helping shape a future where education and industry Go Forward together.
