Guildford on the Road
Our Admissions and Boarding teams have had a busy month on the road, travelling north to Karratha and into the heart of the Wheatbelt to meet families, connect with our community and share what makes Guildford Grammar School a special place to live and learn.
The Season of Field Days
This time of year reminds us just how extensive our Boarding community is. Term 3 is often called the “Field Day Term”. A chance for staff to travel across Western Australia to connect with the regions our Boarding families call home. From the Pilbara to the Wheatbelt and the Great Southern, these visits strengthen ties and celebrate community.
Our Boarding community stretches even further, with families based not only across WA but also interstate and overseas. From Darwin to Singapore, Thailand and Poland. Wherever they are from, our Boarders are united by the same values: kindness, respect and community. These values shape life in our Boarding Houses and connect our families no matter the distance.
FeNaClNG Festival, Karratha
In the first week of term, our team travelled north to the Pilbara for the FeNaClNG Festival. For many, it’s a surprise to learn the festival name comes from the formulas for iron, salt and natural gas, resources that built the region.
It’s also a chance to see our Pilbara families. About 15% of our Boarders are from this region, and until you’ve been there, it’s hard to grasp the vast beauty of the Pilbara or its variety of natural ecosystems. Families from Port Hedland, Newman and Karratha came together to share stories and talk about their Guildford experience.
Director of Boarding, Matt Weston, and Head of Admissions, Gia Smith, spoke with families about Boarding at Guildford Grammar. They shared how we care for every student, the rhythms of daily life, and the opportunities created through our Guildford Ascent program, which gives students a soft landing into Boarding and prepares them early for their journey ahead.
The conversations also highlighted the strength of a coeducational environment. Where brothers and sisters can learn together, and where boys and girls grow in respect, friendship and understanding.
Dowerin Machinery Field Days
The team headed east for the largest field day of the year, Dowerin Machinery Field Days. Thousands turned out, creating an atmosphere full of energy and connection.
Families from across the Wheatbelt stopped by, some with ties to Guildford stretching back more than 100 years and across several generations. From Tammin, Kellerberin and Quairading to Goomalling and Beacon, our Boarding community’s reach was clear.
The Senior School Rock Band lit up the crowd, while the Boodjar Bidi Dance Group created an immersive performance that drew in punters from all around. Past, current and future families gathered at the Guildford stand, celebrating the strength of our community.
Looking Ahead
Next week our team heads to the Newdegate Machinery Field Days, followed later in the year by Albany. Whether it’s double jackets in the cold or sharing sunshine in the Pilbara, these trips matter. They keep us connected with the communities that give Guildford Grammar its heart.
Wherever our Boarders come from, one thing remains constant: kindness, respect and community. They are the values we share, and they are what make our School a home away from home.
