Lady Day
Celebrating the Spirit of Service on Lady Day
Each year on 25 March, Guildford Grammar School pauses to recognise Lady Day, a significant date in the Anglican calendar that commemorates the Angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary with the news that she would give birth to Jesus.
At Guildford Grammar, Lady Day holds special meaning. On this day in 1914, the Chapel of St Mary and St George was consecrated — a remarkable gift made possible through the generosity of London merchant Cecil Oliverson. His selfless act provided a sacred space that still anchors our community today, inspiring reflection, worship and community connection at the heart of our campus.
A School-wide Celebration
Students in Years 3 to 12 gathered in the Chapel for services, while our youngest learners in the Early Learning and Preparatory years celebrated with a colourful Lady Day hat parade and a special blessing in the afternoon.
The School was awash in red as staff and students wore Lady Day ribbons, shaped to reflect the lily from our crest. The colour also symbolises the cross of St George, reinforcing the connection between our identity and faith.
Honouring Leadership and Service
A highlight of the day was the induction of our Lady Day Prefects. Stanton, Olivia and Elizabeth (who was unable to attend) received the towel and bowl — symbols of service and humility. Their role echoes the message of the Angel Gabriel, serving as reminders of hope, joy and compassion within our School.
We also welcomed new Fellows of Council, Chanelle and Georgie, who join us in their stewardship of Guildford Grammar’s mission and values.
A Community Moment
Staff marked the day with cupcakes and conversation during morning tea, a small but meaningful gesture that encouraged connection across year levels and campuses.
Lady Day continues to be one of the most significant moments in our calendar. It invites us to reflect on our heritage, live out our values and recognise the power of service to others.
Lady Day remains one of the most meaningful occasions in the Guildford Grammar calendar. It reminds us of our rich heritage, the values that shape our community and the importance of service, gratitude and hope.
