Water Polo Pathway

Water Polo is a dynamic, team-based sport that blends swimming, strategy, and ball skills – and is an exciting extension of the aquatic journey at Guildford Grammar School. Students with a strong swimming foundation and an interest in team play can begin their water polo experience as early as Year 3 through a fun and inclusive progression model – PSA, JPSSA, JSL, SSWA.

FlippaBall (Years 3-6)

FlippaBall introduces students to the foundations of water polo in a modified, skills-based format.
– Water confidence, ball handling, and passing fundamentals
– Smaller teams, simplified rules, and shallow-water play
– Emphasis on fun, participation, and teamwork

Preparatory Team (Years 5-6)

This stage introduces formal water polo skills while maintaining a fun and supportive environment (JPSSA).
– Builds on FlippaBall with increased focus on tactics, positioning, and game play
– Combines drills with small-sided match simulation
– Prepares players for interschool competition and Middle School Teams

Middle School Teams (Years 7-9)

The Middle School Water Polo program bridges the gap between junior development and senior competition. Students can begin formal participation in school competitions and affiliated clubs (PSA, JSL).
– Focus on skill refinement, tactical understanding, and team play
– Builds game IQ, confidence, and communication in match settings
– Emphasis on player growth through structured training and fixtures

 Senior Teams (Years 10-12)

Advanced athletes are supported in their pursuit of excellence at higher levels.
– Performance-driven training focused on advanced tactics, team systems, and high-intensity gameplay
– Players are expected to model maturity, leadership, and consistency
– Athletes are encouraged to mentor younger players and contribute positively to the wider school community
