Girls Football
Guildford Grammar’s Girls Football program has made remarkable strides this year, with students from Years 5 to 12 showing passion, resilience and true Guildford Grit. Across Terms 2 and 3, players committed to early morning and afternoon trainings, regular fixtures and tough competitions that pushed their skills and strengthened their connection as a team.
Grand Final Glory
Both our Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 Girls Football teams earned their place in the Metro Central Grand Finals on Sunday, 7 September. Despite heavy rain and strong winds, they embraced the challenge and played with determination.
The Year 7/8s secured a famous victory over Vic Park, 3.5 (23) to 2.0 (13), capturing the first Women’s Football Premiership in Guildford Grammar history. It was a defining moment for the program and a reward for months of hard work. Indigo Wilkins (Y8) was recognised as Best on Ground for her outstanding performance.
The Year 9/10s gave everything against a strong Noranda Hawks side, eventually going down 2.2 (14) to 4.7 (31). Though runners-up, their journey through the season revealed the talent and belief that is building year on year.
A Season of Growth
The strength of this program is in its breadth. Years 5–6 players tested themselves in JPSSA and Metro Central competitions, while senior students built experience through Metro Central and ACC. Opportunities with WA Football expanded the learning even further, offering combine testing, umpiring courses, AFL9’s matches, and specialist sessions on strength, conditioning and tackling.
The calibre of the coaching team has been another highlight. AFLW and WAFLW players, including Old Guildfordians Abbygail Bushby (West Coast Eagles) and Carys D’Addario (Swan Districts), brought expertise and encouragement to every training. Alongside athletes from Fremantle, West Coast and East Fremantle, they gave our students a close-up view of the standards and possibilities at the highest level of the game.
More Than a Game
The season has also cultivated community. Families lined the sidelines, Friday nights became a gathering place and visits to AFLW facilities inspired dreams of what could lie ahead. The atmosphere has been one of belonging, where students are supported to pursue their ambitions and enjoy the shared spirit of football.
This year will be remembered for its milestones – a historic premiership, a program growing in strength and the bonds that have formed along the way. More importantly, it will be remembered for the way our girls played and carried themselves, with courage, respect and commitment.
Girls Football at Guildford Grammar is thriving and the foundation now set, promises an even brighter future.
