Life in The Hub

Life in The Hub

At Guildford Grammar School, the transition into Senior School is carefully designed to ensure every student feels supported, connected and confident from day one. Our Years 7-8 program offers a “soft landing”, helping students adjust to new academic expectations while nurturing a strong sense of belonging.

At the heart of this experience is The Hub, a dedicated space exclusively for our Year 7 and 8 students. More than just a physical environment, The Hub is a vibrant community where students can build friendships, connect with peers and feel comfortable in their new surroundings. With age-appropriate learning and social spaces, it provides the perfect balance of structure and independence as students begin their Senior School journey.

A Look into The Hub: Term 1

Throughout the year, students participate in a wide range of activities designed to strengthen relationships and develop teamwork. Last term, our Compassion in Action theme brought this to life, with Year 7 and Year 10 students collaborating on compassion-based art. These moments not only encouraged creativity but also fostered connection and a shared sense of purpose across the year groups.

Students also took part in sessions run by Educated by Nature, building resilience and teamwork through outdoor challenges. Students from St George’s, Harper, Stirling and Woodbridge participated across two engaging days. These introductory sessions are just the beginning, with a series of House-based experiences to come later in the year.

A standout highlight was a visit from Puck, our much-loved wellness dog, who brought smiles to student’s faces as one Year 7 shared, “I’m going to have a good day now because of Puck.”

Our Year 8 cohort also embraced the challenge of the Aquathon as part of their aquatics program. Working in teams of three, students completed Chapel Gift runs alongside swimming laps, all while showcasing their creativity through fun costumes. With Zooper Doopers on the line and strong team spirit throughout, it was a fantastic activity enjoyed by all.

From games of four square and table tennis to quieter moments playing UNO indoors, there has been something for everyone.

What’s to Come?

This term, academic support is a key focus within The Hub. Our HubHelp initiative, led by Year 11 students, provides peer to peer guidance on homework, assignments, study skills and organisation. Running twice weekly before school, these sessions are a valuable opportunity for students to build confidence, stay on top of their work and learn from senior peers.

Together, these experiences create a well-rounded environment where students are supported not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. They contribute to a strong foundation as students’ progress through The Hub.

By the end of Year 8, students move on from The Hub feeling capable, resilient and well prepared to take the next step in their Senior School journey. Most importantly, they do so with a strong sense of community, a foundation that will support them well beyond The Hub.

With such a vibrant start to the year, there is plenty more to look forward to as our Years 7-8 students continue to grow, connect and thrive.
