A Global Perspective
Students in Years 9 to 12 with a keen interest in humanities, economics, history or politics were given a remarkable opportunity to take part in a live videoconference and Q&A with His Excellency Kevin Rudd, Australia’s Ambassador to the United States and former Prime Minister.
Despite it being 9pm in Washington DC and coming off the back of a full day of high-level diplomatic meetings, Ambassador Rudd made time to connect directly with Guildford Grammar students. He engaged with their questions in a generous and thoughtful manner, offering candid reflections, sharp political insight and a good dose of humour.
Walking the Tightrope
Students asked questions on everything from trilateral relations between Australia, the United States and China, to the economic hot-potato of tariffs. Ambassador Rudd spoke openly about the global race for rare-earth minerals and shared why he doesn’t barrack for the Eagles.
His responses were grounded in lived experience and current events. That day alone, he had briefed the board of AstraZeneca on manufacturing participation in Australia, addressed more than 1,000 business leaders on the state of US-Australia economic relations, and met with agricultural industry leaders on the future of exports. Yet he approached the student-led conversation with attentiveness, good humour and evident respect for the calibre of questions being asked.
The Power of Choice
The central theme of his conversation was choice. Ambassador Rudd spoke about Australia’s right to make sovereign decisions in its defence relationship with the US and its economic relationship with China. He encouraged students to reflect on their own beliefs and to make clear choices about the values they want to live by.
Ambassador Rudd spoke candidly about political life, noting that if you don’t commit to your core beliefs, the Australian public will see through you. Without that foundation, he said, the experience of leadership can feel hollow.
A Memorable Exchange
Guildford Grammar students were given a rare and inspiring chance to engage directly with one of Australia’s most experienced international representatives. Ambassador Rudd’s thoughtful and candid conversation was a remarkable opportunity for our students to engage with one of our nation’s top global representatives.
