Go Forward

Term 1 Week 11

One of the absolute joys of working in education with young people is the opportunity you get to see them shine when performing or taking on a new challenge. I am very much looking forward to our Broadway on Swan concert this Thursday evening as our musicians take centre stage in the beautiful setting on the banks of the Derrbyl Yarrigan (Swan River). I thank all members of the community who have worked together to put on what will be a memorable event. The Music staff, P&F support groups, Old Guildfordians Association and our Functions and Events team have a shared vision for this community event that brings us together to celebrate the arts and to enable our students to experience performance at an exceptional level.

No sooner will the stage be packed away and our performers will be embarking on a Cultural Tour to Malaysia which will see our musicians and our Boodjar Bidi dance group performing in professional settings, with a highlight being an Old Guildfordian reunion event in Kuala Lumpur. This will be a wonderful experience for all involved and I have no doubt the students will make a considerable impression on our Old Guildfordians and their Malaysian hosts.

As we head into the holiday break I wish all families well for the period and hope that you are able to find some time together to recharge and enjoy interacting at a slower pace.

CONGRATULATIONS

The Senior School House Athletics Championships were held last Friday and in another close finish Henn’s House won the historic trophy, with Stirling House in second place and Bennett House in third.

Jack Bowins (12Ha) has made numerous state teams for baseball over the past few years, and has been a member of the Baseball WA High Performance Program. This summer he is likely to play for the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League. As a result of these performances Jack has just signed a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox, which means he will head to the US in March 2020 to visit Boston before commencing playing in one of the Red Sox minor league affiliate teams, most likely playing in Fort Myers, Florida.

Zoe Langtry (10He) was recently recognised as the State Open Age Group Champion at the State Diving Championships for the 1m springboard event. This is the second time she has won this event. She is now heading to Brisbane for a week-long national elite dive camp.

We previously acknowledged Zach Matthews (12Fr), Luke Osborne (12Be) and Emerson Varris (12He) for their efforts in the Lions Youth of the Year Award, reaching the District Final. Luke won the Public Speaking Award on the evening and Zach was selected to participate in the State Final of the Lions Youth of the Year competition, to be held this Saturday evening. This component of the competition involves interviews as well as the speech.

Over the weekend Brayden Fernandes (10Sc) made his Premier League debut for the North Coast raiders in the Hockey WA competition, playing with and against a number of members of the Australian men’s team. This is a significant achievement for a Year 10 student (equivalent of playing a WAFL League game).

Congratulations to Evan Overton (8St) who finished first in both heats of the Junior 50m Breast stroke Category at the ACC Inclusive Sports Swimming Carnival on 5 April.
