Guildford Grammar Symphony Orchestra's Debut Concert

12 Aug 2016

We are proud to announce the formation of the Guildford Grammar Symphony Orchestra (GGSO), under the baton of Mr Jonathan Tooby.  This is the first time in over 30 years that the school has formed a symphony orchestra.

The Guildford Grammar Symphony Orchestra will perform its début concert on the evening of Thursday 22 September at 7.30pm in the David Lawe Davies Centre.

This free concert will bring to life many classic pieces including Respighi's "The pines of Rome" and Gershwin's "Rhapsody in blue" - complete with piano soloists.  The concert will also feature classical movie themes including "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Lord of the Rings".  These pieces will be performed live on stage and will be accompanied by stunning visual projections behind the Orchestra.

The conductor of the GGSO, Mr Jonathan Tooby, is an Old Guildfordian (St 82-86) who conducts both the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Youth Orchestra.  Mr Tooby has just conducted his first film score and we are thrilled to have him conducting our inaugural season of the GGSO.

This concert is one of many wonderful free events planned for the remainder of the year.  Other events include:

  • Year 11/12 Recital Evening - Wednesday 7 September
  • Jazz Soiree - Friday 9 September
  • John Hoffman Artist in Residence - Monday 12 September - Friday 16 September
  • Service of the Holy Cross, including the world premiere of "Introitus Ngaala Maaman" by Dr Gerard Brophy, sung by the Chapel Choir accompanied by the Cello, Pipe Organ and featuring the Boodjar Bidi Dancers - Sunday 18 September
