Outdoor Education

Outdoor EducationStarting in Year 2, the Outdoor Education Program challenges students to push their limits and develop their potential in controlled adventurous activities including hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking conducted at locations around Western Australia. From Years 2 to 7 the camps, which range in length from two to five days, focus on working as a team, developing interpersonal relationships, environmental awareness and fun and safety outdoors. In the Senior School, boys undertake programs from five to nine days duration that develop their independence, self-esteem, leadership and problem solving skills through expeditions, adventure activities and retreats.

Although the camps aim to develop each student’s outdoor adventure activity, safety and living skills, an important side benefit of all the year-group programs is to help students with the current issues associated with their personal development: how to work and live successfully with other people, the realisation of their potential, developing independence and a positive sense of self, and the ability to work effectively in teams. Each experience is designed in consultation with teaching staff to challenge students in the safe but demanding natural outdoor environment.

One of the highlights for students is the Year 10 Expedition Week, a program that allows the students to choose the activity camp that most interests them. Options include SCUBA diving, mountain biking, sea kayaking, white water kayaking and abseiling/rock climbing and are conducted at various locations around the state from Exmouth in the North to Albany down South.
