A Commitment to Numeracy and Literacy
Numeracy and literacy form the foundation stone of our junior secondary curriculum. We see it as a culture, rather than a subject.
Numeracy
At Guildford Grammar School, numeracy is a fundamental component of learning across all areas of the curriculum. It involves the ability to use, in context, a combination of:
- underlying mathematical concepts and skills across subjects
- mathematical reasoning and strategies
- general logic and thinking skills
Literacy
In early adolescence, students are extending their range of skills and strategies in a wide range of literacies including, but not limited to:
- Visual Literacy - ability to decode, analyse and critique visual communication
- Personal Literacy – understanding of self, learning style, talents and abilities
- Emergent Literacy – knowledge and competency in emerging technologies
- Oral Literacy – ability to adapt, create, critique the spoken form
- Functional Literacy – knowledge of spelling, grammar, rules and writing
- Transactional Literacy - knowledge and use of forms of writing and their structures
- Academic Literacy - knowing how to learn, find, question
- Information Literacy – knowing how to learn, find, question
- Textual Literacy - knowledge and detail related to specific texts
- Subject-Specific Literacy – subject-specific knowledge
- Cultural Literacy – understanding of our country, history and culture
- Inter-Cultural Literacy - knowledge of the history and culture of other countries
- Critical Literacy – ability to critique, predict, propose and justify
- Inventive Literacy – ability to create, re-design, invent, develop
- Information Literacy - ability to use and assess information and information sources
- Social Literacy – personal, interpersonal and collaborative skills
