Religion, Philosophy & Ethics

In Year Eight students study the history of Guildford Grammar School and the Anglican Church, an introduction to the 4 main world religions (Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism), and the slave trade.

In Year Nine students study capital punishment from a Christian perspective, religion and the environment and the Christian response, and the representation of religion in the media (film, TV soaps and newspapers).
 

In Year Ten students commence the WACE course Philosophy and Ethics Stage 1. Within Philosophy and Ethics class students are able to improve their critical and logical thinking so that they are able to create cogent, rational arguments. Students are given the opportunity to examine core philosophical themes where they can develop their argumentation skills and techniques in order to persuade others, as well as to think and express themselves clearly verbally and in the written form. The four main units of work are critical and logical thinking, medical ethics (including euthanasia and personhood and abortion), ethics of wars, and the relationship between science/technology and religion. Every term there are 2 assessments.
