The Guildford Grammar School Cadet Unit has a proud and long history, from its inception in 1904, where students were required to perform one hour per week of drill, through the turmoil of WWI and WWII, to its present-day structure. The Cadet program is governed by the State and Federal Arms of the Australian Army Cadet Corps, and is supported by the A SQD Tenth Light Horse.
The aim of military training within the Australian Army Cadets (AAC) is to:
* develop an interest in the Army and its traditions;
* encourage cadets to continue military or community service;
* give cadets a foundation of military knowledge and discipline;
* develop the qualities of leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance and initiative, and provide training.
Australian Army Cadets (AAC) is open to all Year 10 students at Guildford Grammar School. Opportunities for further promotion within the rank structure of the AAC are provided, and participation is strongly encouraged. Consequently, some boys remain with the cadet programme beyond year 10 in order further their skills and lead their peers from greater positions of responsibility.
As with any army cadet unit there is an element of drill, but the boys also participate in a range of other activities:
Navigation, Canoeing, Rock climbing, Abseiling, Camping (field craft), Survival (field engineering), Navigation, Martial Arts, Community Service, First Aid, Firearms handling and Marksmanship, Weapons drill, RATEL and Annual Camp.
The Army and the School provide training that adheres to the AAC Training Manual Pam (TMP). The AAC has strict regulations regarding safety in training, and has set the benchmark for best practice in risk management in all cadet-run activities.
