Rowing is a unique and rewarding sport where boys are part of a large and committed team. It is not necessarily always easy but, in times of hardship, the boys work together and become firm friends and confidants, in many cases for life.
The boys attend regattas as a united team, with crews from Year 9 Quad Sculls to the 1st V111 travelling together by bus to the events. This makes for a supportive atmosphere with every oarsman as important as the next, each fulfilling a crucial role in his crew. The most junior boy is as important as the stroke of the 1st V111 and is treated as such. The younger boys look up to the seniors as role models and the seniors provide a nurturing environment for the younger team members.
The parents of rowers play a vital supportive role in rowing at Guildford Grammar School. They provide transport to training, attend the Saturday regattas, prepare a barbecue lunch at the Boatshed for the boys’ return after the regattas, raise funds, assist in the conduct of the annual Rowing Camp and have a lot of fun.
The Guildford Rowing Association (The GRA) is a vibrant organisation which enriches the lives of all who are involved with rowing.
Mr Tony Lovrich, the School's Director of Rowing, was an Olympic rower and coach. His coaching team consists of a group of dedicated men, often Old Guildfordians, who place great emphasis on strong moral and character development as well as rowing skills.
Currently, the Guildford Boatshed is experiencing a challenging developmental phase aimed at recapturing the Hamer Cup and Head of the River titles which were last won by Guildford in 2001.
