Cross Country running is a sport that allows every boy to participate in an athletic event. There is no limit to the number of boys that may run in the team, so individuals of all ability levels are encouraged to join.
The aim of the Cross Country program at Guildford Grammar School is to help runners stay healthy, get stronger and develop their mental skills during races.
At present, Guildford does not participate in PSA Junior Cross Country fixtures. However, any boy in Year 8 or 9 who wishes to choose Cross Country as his winter sport may do so provided that he can train after classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and attend Saturday morning fixtures. Boys who hope to compete in the PSA athletics programme are particularly encouraged to run in the Cross Country team.
Boys who are injured or who have not been selected to play in their chosen sport may participate in Cross Country if they wish, although restrictions apply to some inter-school fixtures.
Expectations
• individual members support and encourage other team members
• all members run to the best of their ability
• participants are punctual and arrive at training by 3.45pm and at competitions by 9.00am to participate in warm-ups, stretching and other race preparation with the team
• instructions from staff and/or officials are noted and implemented
• boys wear the correct uniform for competition and training as detailed in the School Handbook, including compulsory appropriate footwear.
Fixtures
• races commence at 10.00am on Saturdays and are run over courses of approximately 5 kilometres
• the School provides the printed, cloth numbers that are compulsory for some inter-school events
• "home" teams are responsible for courses being adequately marked and marshalled making them clear and safe. They are also responsible for recording finishing times and places so that results can be calculated.
• runners who cannot run in a fixture due to injury or sickness, but are sufficiently well to attend school, are expected to help with marshalling and recording during home fixtures
