Guildford Grammar School offers the following scholarships at Year 7 entry:
The D'Arcy Slater Scholarship
D’Arcy William Slater joined the Preparatory School in 1986 and then became a member of Freeth House until his tragic death on 26th June 1991. He is remembered as a happy and lively teenager full of fun, who was a good student and represented the School in Swimming, Tennis, Football and Chess. The scholarship was established in 1997.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering Year 7, in memory of D’Arcy Slater. The successful applicant will have demonstrated the potential to make a strong all-round contribution to the School and possess early indications of leadership potential. The student should have represented their Primary School or club in a sporting capacity. Preference is given to candidates who come from a worthy family which, for financial reasons, might not normally consider the enrolment of a son at the School. The scholarship provides for the full remission of tuition fees and is tenable for 6 years, provided that satisfactory progress is made.
The Council Scholarship
Each year the School Council awards a number of academic scholarships, which provide for the remission of up to half the annual School tuition fee. The Council Scholarships are awarded for six years in the first instance, assuming satisfactory academic progress.
Harry Campbell Pope Scholarship
A number of scholarships are awarded to boys who are good scholars and whose all-round ability gives them the potential to make a major contribution to the life of the School. They are awarded for entry into Year 7 and have a value of up to half the annual School tuition fee. The Harry Campbell Pope Scholarships are tenable for up to six years, providing that satisfactory progress is made.
Calder Crowther Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded every two years and has a value of up to half the annual School tuition fee for a day boy and is tenable for six years, provided that satisfactory progress is made. The scholarship is for boys entering Year 7 and candidates are selected from the state primary schools in the vicinity of Guildford. Being a biennial award, this scholarship is available for students entering the School in 2014.
Open Music Scholarship
This award is made to boys showing a particular talent in the playing of at least one musical instrument, and is awarded for entry into Year 7. Candidates must be of good character, show evidence of the potential to fulfil the academic requirements of the School and also demonstrate an interest in other co-curricular activities in addition to music. The value of the Scholarship includes remission of music tuition fees and remission of up to half the annual School tuition fee. It is awarded for six years assuming satisfactory progress is made. Selected applicants will be invited for an instrumental audition, followed by an interview with the Headmaster.
Music Instrumental Scholarship
Music Instrumental Scholarships are available for boys who are talented string, brass or woodwind instrumentalists of AMEB Grade 3 level or above. The value of the scholarships is full remission of music tuition fees and instrument hire. Each is tenable for as long as the student remains a significant contributor to Music at the School.
Choral Scholarship
Choral Scholarships are offered to boys who are either presently enrolled at the School or who wish to enter the School. A Scholarship applies while the boy remains a member of the Choir. Its value includes free music tuition for singing, or on one instrument and it may be held in addition to any other Scholarship.
