People in the Chapel
The spiritual and liturgical life of the School along with the Christian and Religious Education curricula are the responsibility of the School Chaplain who is Chaplain to the whole Guildford Grammar School community; Senior School, Preparatory School, staff, parents and guardians, and Old Guildfordians. He is available as spiritual counsellor to all members of the school community.
The Senior Chaplain is the Rev’d Dr Philip Raymont (Father Philip) who took up appointment in July, 2009. Prior to taking up this appointment he had been at the University of Cambridge in England where, after completing his Doctor of Philosophy degree as a mature aged student, he held appointments as Lecturer, Faculty of Education and Senior Tutor, Hughes Hall. He was also Assistant Chaplain and Acting Dean of Chapel and Chaplain at Selwyn College and Acting Chaplain at Newnham College. He was Chair, Graduate Medical Admissions Committee of the University.
Prior to undertaking further post-graduate studies in 2000, Father Philip had been involved in the administration and pastoral care work of affiliated colleges at various universities in Australia; Charles Darwin (1990-1), New England (1992-94), Melbourne (1995-96) and Queensland (1997-2000). He is a Queenslander by birth.
The Chaplain arranges the Chapel services and religious instruction, and is available as the spiritual counsellor for all members of the School community. Boys in Years 8 to 10 receive regular instruction in the Bible and its relevance to current life. Specific Anglican teaching or doctrine is given to candidates for admission to Communion and to Confirmation candidates.
