Message from the Headmaster
Recent years have been marked by significant growth and development here at Guildford Grammar School. We have now concluded the ‘One Campus Project’ which has seen the significant restructuring of the School sports facilities and associated infrastructure. We have also brought closure to the ‘Boarding Renaissance Project’ which has resulted in the complete reformatting of the School’s boarding systems and associated facilities. We are now turning our attention to the next Guildford Grammar School project, and we have named it 'Catalyst' - our Junior Secondary Curriculum.
In 2010, Year 7 will become the first of six years of secondary schooling. A consequence of this decision will be that education within the Guildford Grammar Preparatory School will finish at the end of Year 6. We are not alone with our move in this direction. The vast majority of Western Australian independent schools are doing the same, as are the Catholic Education Office schools.
This structural change provides a unique opportunity for us to review and recreate our curricular and co-curricular educational opportunities, programs and experiences over the three junior secondary years spanning Year 7 to Year 9. To this end, I have appointed Mr Clayton Massey (previously Head of the English Faculty and Acting Deputy Headmaster – Curriculum) to lead the research and consultation that underpins Catalyst.
Mr Massey has consulted broadly with many members of the Guildford Grammar School community as the innovative educational model was formed. This new program will heavily focus on literacy and numeracy skills as well as developing a wide range of skills which will in themselves prepare our boys for the rigors of the senior secondary years, and life and study at a tertiary level, as well as life beyond formal schooling.
All projects, both those concluded and those being developed have evolved simply to facilitate the School’s Mission, which is the realisation of the full potential of each student in our care.
Guildford Grammar School offers a broad and diverse educational experience which aims to further develop the individual child in preparation for life beyond our School gates. If you and your family are considering joining the School, the Staff and I are readily available to meet with you to further explore the various questions that you will undoubtedly have, you will find your reception here to be both warm and welcoming.
